Tabling by Buddhist Communities

Buddhist Peace Fellowship, Portland is proud to host the 14th Annual Buddhist Festival in the Park on Saturday, June 3, with the theme, Practicing Peace, Embracing Community.  Due to renovation of Colonel Summers Park, the festival will be at a new location this year, at Creston Park on Powell Blvd.

Expressing gratitude for the many gifts immigrants have brought to our American society, this 14th Annual Buddhist Festival in the Park has a focus on immigrants and the Buddhism they have brought to our shores. How may we reduce suffering and reduce reactivity? Buddhism teaches non-attachment and non-judgment. It provides skills which help foster equanimity and clarity. It’s teachings emphasize gratitude and generosity. Many Buddhist practitioners have felt the need to increase their civic engagement thanks to the current political climate. How can a Buddhist maintain an open heart and resist harmful policies of the state?

Organizers of the festival felt it is important to give people the tools they are looking for, so we are offering more workshops this year. We emphasize our gratitude for the gifts of the Buddhist Triple Gems: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The Buddha is our teacher. Many Buddhas have brought the Dharma, or the teachings, from one land to another. Without these emigrants, we would not have the Buddhism we have today throughout the world. Nor would we have these teachings without Sangha, or the communities which share the religious practices and embody the teachings.

Participating groups will have booths through the day from 11 am to 4:30 pm.  From noon to 1:45 pm workshops will be offered on beginning a meditation practice and on chanting as practice. An extended workshop will also be offered on the Engaged Buddhist practice of nonviolent direct action. Another workshop is intended to offer a brief introduction to the main shared teachings of Buddhism. As usual there will be a Dharma Talk and a Discussion Panel on the theme. At 4:00, BPF Portland will host a drawing for prizes related to Buddhism. All festival attendees are eligible for one free ticket.

While the Dharma talk and panel discussion occur in the festival’s main canopy, the children's canopy will be busy with story times, crafts, and other activities.

Many different Portland area communities will be represented at the booths.  Pure Land, Zen, Vajrayana, Vipassana, and non-sectarian groups will share news and information about their communities. This is a perfect opportunity for those curious about Buddhism to explore the possibilities available.

The festival is free, and all are welcome.  Organizers ask for mindfulness regarding waste: please avoid single use water bottles and do sort recyclables.
