Welcome to YOUR Portland Neighborhood Community

Hi and thanks for reading this, Portlanders!  I live in Cleveland and my sister and I will be moving to Portland--or nearby--this summer.  We would like to live centrally located to the Hawthorne District and while we don't need to live in the district itself, we would like to live within a 20-minute drive (30 at most).

I have looked (and looked and looked) online to see what is available in our price range, and to be frank, I am overwhelmed by the number of neighborhoods.  However, we are looking for a 2-bedroom that is in the $800-$1000 range ($1100 at most).  I understand that means that we will probably not be able to live IN Portland but if anyone has advice that would narrow my search, I would be SOOOOOOOO grateful.

Tentatively, I am thinking Milwaukie but I don't want to limit myself if there are other locations that would meet our criteria.

TLDR:  where would you recommend looking for an apartment in the $800-$1000 range that is within 30 minutes (at most) of the Hawthorne District?  Thanks soooo much!

Well, given commuting in Portland actually isn't all that bad, there are dozens of options within 20-30 minutes drive of SE Portland (Hawthorne area).  It would take longer if you are thinking of taking public transit.

$1000 for a 2 bedroom in SE Portland limits your options to be centrally located (the closer into city center, typically the higher the rent), but there are many options a bit further out on East and SE Portland.  Try

You can look up which neighborhood these are in by the zip code.  http://www.portlandneighborhood.com/portlandzipcodes.html

Let us know if you have questions on neighborhoods once you narrow it down.  Good luck!

Hi Lorrie--thank you so much!  I will check these out and when I narrow it down to a few, I will ask again.  Your help is much appreciated :)

Note for anyone else coming to this discussion. Rental prices in Portland are shooting up quick. $1000 might be able to find a one bedroom/one bath as of now. But they are disappearing quickly and going off the market quickly. If you look in East Portland (Hazelwood, Montavilla, Powellhurst-Gilbert there are still some places in that price range.

Hi Rick, original poster here.  Thanks so much for your response.  Actually, my sister just got her dream job and won't be coming with me so I will be looking for a roomie via Craigslist,  and I can be a bit more flexible now.  However, I will check out those neighborhoods that you recommended b/c it helps to be able to narrow my search--so many neighborhoods in Portland!  Thanks again :)

Even though this thread is a year old the increase in rental housing are continuing into 2016. What we have seen at my moving company is that there are more people moving into Portland than we are relocating out.

This trend has been going on for some time now and that is why you will continue to see rents increase. My best advice is to find something you like and lock in at least a one year lease. Plan on the rent increasing by another 5 to 10% the next year.

We keep Portland stats each year of relocation in/out activity which you can view at http://americanfamilyvanlines.com.

We also don't see this trend slowing down anytime soon as Portland has become a trendy and desirable place to live.
