Out biking this evening in upper Irvington and saw the weirdest thing: a raccoon just wandering the sidewalk and into the street at about 5:30pm. It looked wobbly and sick and it kind of scared me. I felt bad for him, assuming he was ill and perhaps dangerous, too. It was the first time I've ever seen a raccoon so early in the day.

Angela - Here are my gear and clothing for winter bike riding in Portland. For the bike (beyond standard gear like pump, tubes, etc.): (1) LED flashing lights front and rear (2) rechargeable batteries for lights (3) front and rear fenders (4) sturdy rear rack (5) waterproof pannier(s). For my clothes: (1) helmet cover (2) rain jacket w/ pit zippers (3) rain pants (4) cuff clips if rain pants do not have (5) under layers, including socks, that can dry during day at work (6) warm gloves. I have found some inexpensive winter gloves that I really like. They are from TurfKing and they are called WarmGrip Termal Gripping Gloves. You can find them in home improvement and garden stores. I have never had to use shoe booties, but I sometimes see them.

Hey, are you wondering what those green sections are painted on the street throughout Portland? I was. They are called "bike boxes" and they are meant to make biking safer. Learn more:
What is a bike box?

The bike box is an intersection safety design to prevent bicycle/car collisions, especially those between drivers turning right and bicyclists going straight. It is a green box on the road with a white bicycle symbol inside. It includes green bicycle lanes approaching and leading from the box.

Why are bike boxes being installed?

The main goal is to prevent collisions between motorists turning right and cyclists going straight. It's all about visibility and awareness. At a red light, cyclists are more visible to motorists by being in front of them. At a green light, the green bike lane through the intersection reminds motorists and cyclists to watch for each other.

Mark,

That is incredible! I know I am going to sound like a weenie here but what is your advice for dealing with the wet and cold of winter?

Wouldn't know it to look at me (that age thing) but I have been biking to/from work downtown for the past (almost) nine years now. Rain or shine. About nine miles a day. I highly recommend it as a way to beat the traffic, take in the sights, sounds and smells of Portland, and keep your heart and lungs healthy!

Portland Named "Platinum"! - League of American Bicyclists names Portland a "Platinum" level bicycle friendly community -

LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS NAMES PORTLAND
A “PLATINUM” LEVEL BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

(PORTLAND, OR) – The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) and its bicycle community partners are celebrating five years of working successfully to earn Portland the “Platinum” Level Bicycle Friendly Community award from the League of American Bicyclists. The coveted designation of “Bicycle Friendly Community,” given at levels from Bronze to Platinum, recognizes those communities that are improving conditions for bicyclists and cycling safety. Portland is the first large U.S. city to gain the designation and joins Davis, California, as the only other Platinum city in the country.
