I can hardly believe we are at the end of the first week in November already...my, how time flies. I need to get out and put the "Moss Out" on the lawn. My white picket fence and arbor is already turning green, and my rose bushes need a winter trim. And I already forgot to plant flower bulbs for next spring, and now it is soggy and wet outside so I may not get to that at all this year. I was shopping in Fred Meyer on Halloween looking for a last minute costume and was horrified to discover Chris…

You’re invited to join us for this film showing.
Lakota Women: Siege at Wounded Knee
This film depicts the radicalization of Mary Crow Dog after years of being denied her cultural heritage. As part of the American Indian Movement (AIM), she took an active role in the 1973 uprising of her tribe in South Dakota at the siege of Wounded Knee. Two thousand American Indians took a defiant stand against the U.S. Army, the F.B.I., and the reservation’s authorities to demand equal rights.
Film will be…

Come to a film showing of:
"The Black Press: Soldiers without Swords"
This fascinating film chronicles the important role of Black community newspapers and their political and historic contribution to literacy under slavery, civil rights, and liberation struggles. Many of these papers were ahead of their times, too, for employing women as photographers, reporters and editors. Stick around for a post-video discussion on the role of radical journalists and news media today.
Saturday, Novembe…

Happy Halloween, Portland. Head down to the Portland Saturday Market for Halloween festivities today. The weather today seems mild, and the rain is supposed to taper off so it might be nice tonight for trick or treaters. If you have parties and other events to go to tonight, be safe and have fun. If you haven't made plans yet and are looking for something fun to do tonight,…

I visited our Portland Concordia neighborhood yesterday, and met a couple of new businesses and wonderful Portlanders who own or work in them (I will post more about those later today). Concordia is in North/NE Portland and is a perfect example of one of our great Portland communities--full of independent business, quirky shops, great little restaurants, coffee shops and bars, and loads of creativity and positive energy put forth by the business owners and people who live here. As a part of the…

Onda Gallery and Gaurdino Gallery are hosting their annual Dias de los Muertos celebration with an art opening and procession on October 29th from 6 pm - 9 pm.
Vince and I are honored to participate in both events. We are installing the altar "Doy Gracias" or "I give thanks" to anchor one corner of the gallery at Onda, and the Mexican Consulate is building an incredible altar to anchor the other corner. There will be performers singing traditional songs, reciting poetry, including satyrical poe…

Hello, Portland, and hello rain...it's b-a-a-c-k. Yesterday I was driving downtown and wet leaves were falling from the trees and onto my windshield. Ugh...there still might be some leaves left for a couple last chances of photos of the autumn leaves changing, but we are running out of time this season. Today's weather forecast is partly cloudy so this might be a good day to get outside!
I don't know about you, but I am in the mood for fall. The cool air has me already lighting a fire in my fir…

I am carrying my camera every place I go these days trying to catch some last images of Portland before the rain. Of course I will take photos in the rain, too, but October brings such bright contrasting colors and the photos are so pretty. I took a stroll through the Pearl District this morning, on my way to meet a friend for a cup of coffee at Barista. I beat the rain and snapped some lovely images of the Pearl as the leaves are beginning to change and the colors really pop! I love the tiny little enclaves of nature in the city with the flower pot gardens spilling color forth, and of course the red bricks, green patches of lawn, and blue sky reflected back in the windows of the lofts and buildings.
If you enjo…

These days are fast and few-- Portland in the fall, that is. We've had incredible weather these last several weeks- dry and sunny for the most part- and I feel thankful for it. Walking the dogs in nice dry weather is about to end and I am savoring every last non-muddy-paw step of the way.
The leaves are turning and they are spectacular. I am itching to get out there with my Nikon D40 this weekend, rain or shine! This is also a reminder that we are half way through October and that means halfway…
